The Aegean cat is an ancient resident of Greece, taking its name from the Aegean Sea and its islands. The Cyclades islands they are full of these intelligent cats. Although the Aegean cat lives in Greece since centuries, it is considered a new breed, recognized lately by breeder organizations. The Aegean cats are considered to be Greece’s national treasure. But let’s see their main characteristics: They are medium sized with athletic body. Their eyes are slanted, usually green. Their ears are covered with hair with rounded tips. Usually the Aegean cats are bicolor or tricolor, semi-longhaired, with dominating color the white. No matter the patterns, the stripes or the colors (usually black, cream, blue, red) the dominating one is the white. Their paws are rounded, medium sized.
Aegean cats loves fish and fishing, so especially the ones living on the islands, they tolerate water, because of their love for fish. Usually they walk around the ports, where the fishermen boats arrive, trying to get the most they can. They are very independent, intelligent, sociable, and easy to approach. They are very expressive, usually using certain vocalisms, not only meow. They are playful, always seeking attention and caress and overwhelmingly friendly. They are very affectionate and loyal and they are ideal pets. They recognize and bond with one person mainly and they follow this person. They are getting well with children but not very small ones (because they use their nails when playing), and they are getting well with other cats or well behaving dogs, especially if they are raised together.
Aegean cats own the predators’ characteristics of the felines highly enough. They are excellent hunters and their movements, even when playing, are the ones of the predators. It is common to hunt and bring at your door rodents, small snakes and even doves or other small birds. They are killers by instinct, even though they don’t need to kill to eat. It is part of their daily life and their game.
The Aegean cat is considered to be a healthy breed, with very few genetic health problems. They don’t need special care or grooming, given they clean their fur like most of cats. Regarding their food, they need a balanced nutrition and this nutrition must include fish once in a while. They really adore fish. In the islands, they usually seek for fish, getting very well with the fishermen and waiting with patience to earn their fish share. Thus, you shouldn’t omit this if you adopt one, offering a bit boiled fish, although they are used to eat it raw as well.
It is highly recommended to adopt an Aegean cat if you have space for them to play, run and hunt. In general they need free access and they get better when they can practice their instincts. Of course they can live in an apartment, but in this case you should feed somehow their playful mood.
