The German Rex is one of the oldest of the Rex cats. It is the descendent of Lammchen and Fridolin who became the founders of the German Rex breed. As the name suggests, this breed of cat originated in Germany. It bears a striking resemblance to the famous British Cornish Rex. However, the German Rex is not as popular as the Cornish Rex. A German Rex cat is very friendly and quickly bonds with its owner.
The German Rex is a medium sized, sturdy cat. Legs are medium in length leading to small, round paws. Tail is medium to long in length and tapering. The head is rounded with well developed cheeks, medium sized ears, round eyes and a strong muzzle. The most remarkable feature of the German Rex, however, is its short, silky coat with extremely short awn hairs. Unlike the Cornish Rex, the awn hairs are thicker than the hair in the undercoat, which makes the cat look woolly. All colours are permitted.
The German Rex is an active, intelligent, playful breed of cat. They get along well with children and other household pets. They like to be close to their human companions, and don’t do well if left for long periods of time on their own. It is said that they are an extremely gentle and loyal breed of cat and as such, make the ideal family pet. Their coat is relatively easy to maintain, with just the occasional brush required to help remove dead hairs. Though active, this breed has tremendous patience and is extremely loyal. When not playing with their owner, they enjoy lying down and being petted.
The short-haired German Rex does not require much grooming. In addition to regularly examining its ears and eyes for infections, requires only a weekly brushing.
