It is important to know that the Donskoy and Peterbalds are completely different breeds from Sphynx. Most people watch the cats and think, no hair means same breed. It’s not true! They are both hairless, but by different genetic reasons. They also have a completely different look. The Peterbald is a svelte cat, very elongated body and very graceful legs. They want human attention like no other breed. Peterbalds are extremely intelligent, outgoing, friendly and they are very agile and quick. If you want a loving cat almost like a dog, this is the correct choice. Currently the Peterbald is outcrossed to Orientals and Siamese to maintain the type and improve the health and vigor of the breed.
The Peterbald coat is unusual and hard to describe, because it can vary from sticky bald having course, curly hair. Peterbalds many are born with a coat of curly course that slowly disappears as it matures the cat. Some may miss the thick curly coat for 4 months, others can take up to 2 years or cannot lose the coat at all.
Due to their unique features and lack of hair, Peterbalds require special care. They are indoor cats and may require extra heating during the colder months. Try not to let your cat in the sun he or she will have a burn in a very short period of time.Hairless cats have a higher metabolism. They burn off calories quicker and they don’t have as much hair as other cats. As a result, they lose body heat much quicker. They need a little extra help to stay warm and extra food to restore their energy.
They get along well with other cats and dogs and make ideal pets for children. They love to play and will be happy as long as the children aren’t too rough with them. Some hairless cats have no eye lashes so they tend to get a lot of junk in the corner of their eyes. The eyes should be wiped daily with a warm, moist wash cloth. They need to have their ears cleaned periodically. Like other cats, Peterbald nails should be trimmed once or twice a month.
